Play
For the child, no matter what age, play is as essential as breathing. Research tells us that play is crucial for a child's development, learning and well-being.
This page will be regularly updated with practical opportunities for children, parent information and photos.
Mass, Volume, Capacity, Position!Find a variety of containers and utensils that you may no longer need, and head outside. Access to water, dirt or sand would be ideal for this play as children can fill containers, empty them and experience how 'heavy' feels. Imagination will take over as children develop their social and emotional skills through role playing. Sit back, and watch the beauty of how your child interprets the world.
How many Legos does it Weigh?Find some lego blocks, a coat hanger and some string. You will also need to collect some objects to weigh. Use the coat hanger as a balance and attach the string to either side. The coat hanger will need to be hung on a door handle some sort of round rail. Attach the item you want to weigh on one side of the coat hanger and use the Lego blocks to work out the weight of each object.
Frozen Ice PaintEmbrace the cold with chilly ice paint! Kids love to swirl the melting paint over paper, creating beautiful designs. They’ll practice their colour recognition and counting skills while observing paint going from a liquid to a solid and then back again. Click on the picture to head to the recipe.

Fine Motor Skills and CreativityCollect toilet rolls or rolls from paper towel. Allow your child access to them along with pencils, textas, crayons or paint (whatever you have available in your home). Add some extra loose parts that you have access to such as wool, string, old buttons and unused materials. Your child could create a whole family of puppets or dolls using these materials. They then may even become script writers as they write a play to perform to you using what they have created.
Build a NestGo outside and collect some natural materials to make a nest for an animal of your choice. It might be for a bird, a lizard, or even a dinosaur!
Soap PlaydoughYour kids will have so much fun making different shapes and playing with the dough while you know it is safe (you use natural ingredients), mess-free, and it also gets them cleaned. Yes, after you play with it, you can use it as a soap. Win! Win! Click on the picture to head to the recipe.
Nature ExplorationExploring nature is such a joy for young children as there’s so much to discover, even within the simplest of flowers set out on a tray with a magnifying glass and scissors!
